The 2023 Toyota Tundra was released with very few edits from its all-new 2022 design. The most hyped addition for the new model year is Toyota’s SX Package. Specific for the SR5 grade, the SX Package offers a more minimalist aesthetic with bold black accents inside and out, removed or blacked-out badging, and Dark Gray Metallic wheels.

Rolling with the refresh that was so popular with the 2022 model year, the third-generation Tundra is a triple-threat – geared for adventure, built with power, and laden with comfort. The 2023 Tundra is a full-size pickup intended for hard work, rugged play, and easy, reliable day-to-day use.

Known for durability, emphasized with the Million Mile Tundra driven by Victor Sheppard since 2007,

Toyota brings its modern muscle in the form of a Twin-Turbo V-6 (gas-driven or electric hybrid). The i-FORCE 3.4 Liter Twin-Turbo V-6 produces 389 horsepower with 479 pound-feet of torque. This is standard on the:

  • SR
  • SR5
  • Limited
  • Platinum
  • 1794

The i-FORCE MAX 3.4 Liter Twin Turbo V-6 Hybrid meanwhile, develops 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque. This Hybrid is standard in the TRD Pro and Capstone and available as an option for the Limited, Platinum, and 1794 Edition. A standard 10-speed automatic combines with all of the Tundra engines for a smooth performance experience. Drivetrain options are Rear-Wheel-Drive with Automatic Limited-Slip or 4WDemand (part-time four-wheel-drive).

Toyota’s gas-powered V-6 has tested with a zero to 60 time in the low six-second timeframe and clocked a quarter-mile in the high 14s. The 2023 Tundra has an EPA-estimated fuel rating of up to 18 MPG City, 24 MPG Highway, and 22 MPG combined. This ranks the 2023 Tundra very close to; in the middle of the full-size truck segment, compared to 2WD models – Ram 1500 with 17/25 MPG and Chevy Silverado 1500 at 18/22 MPG or 4WD models which show Ram 1500 at 16/23 MPG, Toyota SR at 17/23 MPG, and 18/21 MPG. The SR and SR5 hold 22.5 gallons of fuel, while all other grades have a capacity of 32.2 gallons.

Exterior Design

Regardless of the trim you choose, the 2023 Tundra continues to offer some fantastic exterior design details. Maintaining the 2022 exterior design, the Tundra still features an ultra-high-strength steel cabin combined with an aluminum-reinforced composite bed, and an aluminum hood and front door panels. The Aero front spoiler and active grille shutters remain.

While lower grades continue to feature a big slab of black plastic across the imposing grille, you do get full-LED lighting across all trims. Move up the ladder and you get more bling with more brightwork on the grille and body-colored door mirrors, etc. Go with the more off-road-ready TRD or TRD Pro models and things get even more menacing. The TRD Pro for example comes with an LED Lightbar and is available in a grade-exclusive solar octane color. The camo accents sure is a nice touch.

Available exterior colors are:

  • Blueprint
  • Army Green
  • Lunar Rock
  • Solar Octane
  • Supersonic Red
  • Smoked Mesquite
  • Wind Chill Pearl
  • Midnight Black Metallic (New for 2023)
  • Celestial Silver Metallic (New for 2023)
  • Magnetic Gray Metallic (New for 2023)

Tundra interior trims for the SR and SR5 are limited to Black fabric. Higher grades add the SofTex option available in Black, Boulder, and Cockpit Red. Synthetic leather – SofTex, is a registered material from Toyota that weighs roughly 50 percent less than leather. Appealing to those who go green, SoftTex creates 85 percent fewer CO2 emissions and 99 percent fewer VOCs than conventional synthetic leather. Premium Leather is offered in Saddle Tan, Black and White, and Rich Cream.

Cab seating offers a 60/40 split bench with a folding rear. A center armrest with cup holders is added to all grades above the SR5. Storage compartments under the rear seat with adjustable compartments are available for all gas-powered models.

Interior comfort is controlled with single-zone climate control for the SR and SR5 and double-zoned for all other trims. The CrewMax cab has rear-seat air vents. The driver is given a 10-inch Head-Up Display with a nav and a speedo. Multimedia technology is displayed in an 8.0-inch or upgraded 14-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. Rivals within the half-ton light-duty, full-size pickup category include:

Of its competitors, the Tundra offered the most recent redesign from 2022. The Titan’s last revamp dates back to 2017, Ford in 2021, and all others in 2019.

In the J.D. Power 100 Point Consumer Ratings, verified owners ranked the 2023 Toyota Tundra 4th in the segment. Shared dislikes were ease of loading and unloading, which other manufacturers have addressed with multi-function tailgates, outside noise audible within the cabin, and engine sound.

So to summarize while the 2023 Tundra combines Toyota's tried and tested underpinnings, butch exterior styling, and a tech-laden cabin, with the new powertrain's versatile capability; with only a V-6 under the hood, its 12,000 pounds towing capacity still falls short of the competition.
