The Korean maker Genesis is relatively new to this all-electric game, but it surely does an amazing job even with the few models it has. Its first dedicated EV was the GV60 SUV, but it also has electrified versions of the G80 and the GV70. Unlike the GV60, these two models do not ride on their own dedicated platform, but are built on the same platforms as the 2022 Genesis G80 and the GV70. This, however, doesn't make them less impressive electric vehicles, but on the contrary, they are both serious threats on their segment of the market. The electric 2023 Hyundai Genesis G80 is new to the market, and very few people pay attention to it, but the electric luxury sedan is loaded with features that will make it a serious competitor on the market. And, while the range may not be as impressive as it is for Tesla, its relatively smaller price and better equipped interior could make you change you mind when it comes about buying the best electric vehicle.

Many have said that while the Genesis G80 Electrified is a more premium EV when compared to models like Tesla Model 3 or Polestar 2, it can't really be considered a proper competitor for models like Tesla Model S or Porsche Taycan. And while this may be true in terms of range or power, the 2023 Genesis Electrified G80 is a more luxurious ride when compared to the Model S, and for a lot less. While the Tesla Model S is priced from $94,990, the Electrified G80 has a starting price of $80,920. The Genesis EV is also a little bit cheaper than the Porsche Taycan S - priced from $86,700. The only problem is that the Genesis G80 Electrified is currently available in only 12 U.S. states, which means very few people can enjoy it at the moment.

The Electrified G80 is built on the same platform as the ICE-powered 2022 Genesis G80, but it is a lot more efficient than most EVs out there. People were expecting the Electrified G80 to be built on the same E-GMP platform as most of the Hyundai and Kia electric vehicles, but Genesis decided against it. Even so, the Electric G80 benefits from the same fast-charging 800V system that enables the battery to charge from 10- to 80-percent in just 22 minutes - making it one of the fastest charging EVs out there. The model is also offered with an 11kW standard charger that charges the battery from 10- to 100-percent in about 9 hours. Once charged, you can travel up to 265 miles with no interruptions.

One of the coolest features of the 2023 Electrified G80 is that it comes loaded with technology - something that shouldn't surprise you, since we are talking about a Genesis model. The model is offered as standard with a 12.3-inch 3D digital instrument cluster and a 14.5-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system with a six-inch climate control display. The rear passengers will also get to enjoy twin 9.2-inch rear seat entertainment screens. The infotainment screen comes with wired Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto, augmented reality (AR) navigation, and unlike the one offered in the GV60, it can be controlled via a flat rotating dial placed on the center console. The 12.3-inch high-definition widescreen displays a vivid navigation screen with important information on the driver assistance system and crossroads. A 20-speaker Lexicon by Harman sound system also comes as standard.

Interior of the 2023 Genesis Electrified G80

In terms of interior space, the 2023 Electrified Genesis G80 took a hit due to the addition of the batteries. While the headroom and the legroom aren't as great as with the ICE-powered model, the quality and comfort are just as impressive. The model is only offered in the loaded Prestige form, which means the best quality leather upholstery finished with natural dye and attractive mostly natural wood composite trim. Both the front and the rear seats are very comfortable, with the front ones offering an Ergo Motion feature. This includes seven air-cells placed inside the seats that will inflate and deflate the lumbar support for enhanced side support. The rear seats are a little bit more basic, and they feature a fold-down armrest with cupholders. And, speaking of cup holders, there are two more up front, plus a few other hidden storage places: one under the covered floor console, and one in the mini overhead console. There is also additional room in the door panels and the glove box.

Electric motors in the 2023 Genesis Electrified G80

The electric Genesis G80 is powered by two 136-kW electric motors, one placed on the front axle and one on the rear axle, which means the model is offered with all-wheel-drive as standard. The two motors deliver a combined 365 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. The motors get their juice from an 87-kWh battery system that is not light at all. It weights in at 1,200 pounds, raising the EV's total weight to about 5,000 pounds. Even with the added weight, the Electrified G80 goes from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds and up to a top speed of 155 mph. While this is not as fast as the Tesla Model S Plaid that goes from 0 to 60 mph in just 1.99 seconds, it also does not deliver 1,020 horsepower!

5 The Genesis Electrified G80 Looks Elegant

Just like all the other Genesis models, the Electrified G80 is defined by the same "Athletic Elegance" exterior design that blends dynamism with elegance and eco-friendly materials. At first look, it may appear that the EV is identical to the gas-powered G80, but in reality, they are quite different. The electric 2023 Genesis G80 features a closed G-Matrix patterned crest grille - which also hides the charging door. When viewed from the side, the EV looks identical to its gasoline-powered sibling, but it has new 19-inch turbine-shaped alloy wheels. The rear is also similar to the standard G80, but it features a unique bumper execution, and it lacks the exhaust system. The Electrified G80 also sees the introduction of a new Matira Blue finish that was inspired by the blue waters of the South Pacific Ocean.

2023 Genesis Electrified G80 is a fast ride

At the end of 2022, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) designated the 2023 Genesis Electrified G80 a Top Safety Pick+ - the fifth model in Genesis lineup to receive the top honors from IIHS next to the GV60, GV70, GV80, G70. The designation comes as no surprise, since the electric G80 is loaded with a comprehensive suite of state-of-the-art active and passive safety technologies. First, the model is built on an innovative platform that has advanced high strength steel for rigidity and safety. Then it features a 10-airbag system, including center side airbags for the front seats. The list of safety technologies is also long and includes Forward Collision Avoidance-Assist with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Keep Assist, Blind-Spot Collision Warning, among many others.

3 Regenerative Braking Controlled By Paddle Shifters

2023 Genesis Electrified G80 - steering wheel with paddle shifters

Regenerative braking is not a new thing for the electric vehicles, but on the Electrified G80, it can be controlled step-by-step with the paddle shiftets mounted on the steering wheel. The regenerative braking can be adjusted on a level from 0 to 3: the left paddle shifter increases it, while the right side one decreases it. When level 0 is selected, the brake disc cleaning function is on, which means the regenerative braking performance is reduced. Once the brake discs are cleaned, the regenerative braking function is restored. The driver has to pull and hold the left side paddle shifter for more than 0.5 seconds to activate the One-pedal driving function and increase the regenerative braking. In this case, stopping the vehicle is possible by pulling the paddle shifter. The model also benefits from a Smart Recuperation System feature that controls the regenerative braking automatically according to the road gradient and driving condition.

It is true the Genesis Electrified G80 does not offer the best range on the market, but it does feature an optional solar roof that harnesses the power of the sun to charge the high-voltage and low-voltage batteries. This will not only prevent the batteries from being discharged completely but will also improve the vehicle's driving range and provide additional power for comfort features such as the air conditioning. The roof is lined with an advanced photovoltaic (PV) material made from silicon that serves as the best conductor to “absorb” sunlight. According to Genesis, the solar roof can add an extra 1.8 miles of range per day, or about 715 miles over the course of a year.

1 It Comes With Active Road Noise Control

Electric vehicles are, in general, very quiet cars, but the Electrified Genesis G80 is also equipped with an Active Road Noise Control function that cancels the road noise and makes the driving experience even more pleasant. Genesis used this feature for the first time in the GV80 SUV, and it enjoyed great success among customers. You can push the Media button placed above the climate controls and access the "Sounds of Nature" feature. You can select from a variety of backgrounds, including the sound of waves, dropping rainfall, a crackling fireplace, birds singing, and a lot more. Based on the sound selected, the noise made by the tires or the road, will be replaced by it.
