Compact crossovers today have replaced the mid-size sedan and have gone on to become one of the most popular types of vehicles. So clearly, if EVs want to take over the market, they must dominate this segment. However, there are a couple of things that have really prevented widespread EV adoption. Driving range, charging infrastructure, but more crucially, a high entry point and price. This is especially true since the average cost of a new EV today is still around $65,000.

While models like the Nissan Leaf and the Chevrolet Bolt EV have catered to the lower end of the EV market for a while now, they don’t necessarily pack the cutting edge kit in terms of technology. With no entry-level $25,000 Tesla in sight, GM intends to tap into this lucrative space with its Chevrolet Equinox EV. With an estimated starting price of $30,000 and up to 300 miles of range on some trims, the Equinox EV, which is Chevy's third all-electric vehicle, sure does have the potential to get the ball rolling for the mass market EVs.

2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV Performance and Capability

The Equinox EV is available across five trims:

- 1LT

- 2LT

- 2RS

- 3LT

- 3RS

The advancement of Chevy’s EV strategy continues to gain momentum. The Ultium platform from GM is proving to be quite helpful as the Equinox EV features the same Ultium platform as other GM EVs such as the Cadillac Lyriq, the Silverado EV, and the recently unveiled Chevrolet Blazer EV.

While Chevy is yet to reveal the exact battery capacity figures, the Equinox EV will come with two different battery sizes and the small battery is only available with the base $30,000 1LT model, which offers 250 miles of range. The 1LT packs a front-mounted motor with 210 horsepower and 242 pound-feet of torque.

The driving range of all other front-wheel drive Equinox EV models is 300 miles. However, you can also upgrade to Chevy's e-all-wheel drive (eAWD) system on the 2LT, 3LT, 2RS, and 3RS versions if you’re after more power and all-weather traction.

The dual motor setup has a combined output of 290 horsepower and 346 pound-feet of torque with the range figure dropping to 280 miles on the all-wheel drive models. One pedal driving with regenerative braking helps to further maximize range. With the eAWD setup, 60 mph comes up in just 6.0 seconds and you can tow up to 1500 pounds.

For every hour of charging at home, an Equinox EV will add roughly 34 miles to its range with the standard 11.5 kW level 2 (AC) charger, and on the top-tier Equinox 3RS eAWD, owners get a faster 19.2 kW level 2 (AC) charger, which adds about 51 miles per hour to the range. With a peak charging capability of 150 kilowatts, the Equinox EV can add up to 70 miles of range in just 10 minutes at DC fast charging stations.

Chevy wants to make the transition to EVs seamless which is why drivers can use the MyChevy app to locate the closest charging station and plan a route using the onboard Nav. You will have access to more than 110,000 charging locations in the United States and Canada.

Exterior Design

The Equinox EV is easily identifiable from the outside as a GM electric vehicle. The design language works well for the larger Equinox EV and it seems like a solid progression of the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV.

But first, let's take a closer look at the vehicle's dimensions. The EV is longer than the existing gasoline-powered Equinox, both in terms of wheelbase and overall length, giving it a comparable yet distinct appearance. With a low roofline, a high clearance, along with a sleeker aesthetic, the Equinox EV sure does have a nice stance and is every bit the design that you expect from a modern EV.

Approaching the vehicle, you’ll find front and back walk-up lighting animations (on top trims), which are now starting to become the norm across the industry. 19-inch wheels are the standard size. Depending on the trim, you can choose between optional 20 and 21-inch wheels. Another option is a two-tone paint job with a blacked-out roof on RS trims or a white roof on LT trims.

While base trims get the obligatory black plastic cladding on the wheel arches and running boards - the hallmark of a crossover these days, I'm glad trims higher up feature body-colored wheel arches, which certainly lend this compact EV Crossover, a more premium look.

- Galaxy Gray Metallic

Optional Exterior Colors:

- Riptide Blue Metallic Summit White

Interior Quality and Technology

Step inside and you’ll appreciate how well GM designers have seamlessly merged the massive dual-screen setup for the infotainment and the gauge cluster displays. The base models come with a 11.0-inch digital instrument cluster along with a 11.0-inch infotainment screen.

2LT and up allows you to upgrade to a much larger 17.7-inch central infotainment screen. You also have the option to upgrade to a premium Bose audio system on the 3LT and 3RS trims. An available wireless charger should keep your smartphone juiced up. GM's Ultifi intelligent over-the-air software update will enable your Equinox EV to get the latest versions of downloadable apps and features.

The Equinox EV has room for five. LT trims offer up a Sky cool gray interior or black interior with blue accents. The RS trims meanwhile offer a more sport Adrenaline red interior or a black interior with red accents.

All but the base model get heated front and rear seats, 8-way power adjustable driver seats, 6-way adjustable passenger seats (3LT and 3RS) heated flat-bottom steering wheel, heated outside mirror, and even heated windshield wipers. Also available is an optional sunroof.

While Chevy still hasn’t revealed exact figures, the sole cargo statistic supplied by the automaker pertains to the total cargo capacity. With the back seats folded down, you'll have roughly 57.2 cubic feet of space, and you can access the trunk with the dual-height cargo floor, using the power tailgate.

Main Competition

With an estimated starting price of $30,000, Chevy is banking on the Equinox EV to really make electric vehicles more popular. However, despite the fact that low prices grab attention, most people won’t make the switch to electric cars until they outperform gas-powered competitors in terms of cost, features, and vital ownership experience.

The $30,000 is a crowded space with several established gas-powered models like the Toyota RAV4 and upcoming Honda CR-V to name a few. As for all-electric rivals, the Equinox EV will take on its very own stable mate in the form of the Bolt EV. It also significantly undercuts the likes of a Tesla Model Y, which starts well north of $60,000. Here is a list of the cheapest EVs you can buy today.

According to The Drive, what could further sweeten the deal is that the Equinox EV could also be likely eligible for the EV Tax credit, further bringing down the price to as low as $22,500.

This should give Chevy, a significant price advantage, especially since producing an EV remains an expensive proposition, but if GM is able to pull it off and keep dealer markups in check, they really do have a winner on their hands as the Chevrolet Equinox EV would also effectively undercut the Bolt EUV that costs $26,595.
