There’s a bit of a joke going around about RAM’s electrification plans. After all, far from being premature, RAM hasn’t shown much in terms of EVs. That is up until recently. But the joke is about performance concerns of a full Battery Electric Pickup Truck. And by being late to the party, RAM is trying to show it took its time perfecting the formula. Chipping away at the rough edges, and challenges in making an electric pickup that is going to perform well doing pickup truck stuff. For example, things like towing heavy loads, and off-road use tend to drain the battery of these already heavy vehicles much faster. Ram hasn’t revealed much information about the RAM EV, but expectations are running high. And, we know some things we’re going to share with you now. We know, for instance, it’s supposed to come out in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Stellantis, owner of the RAM brand uses the BEV acronym for its Battery Electric Vehicles. RAM is doing a similar thing, and it's calling its future electric pickup the RAM 1500 REV. REV this time stands for revolution. But it also shows how clever it is. It has the initial letter of the RAM brand ‘R’, and also ‘EV’ in it, which shows what’s it about. And that’s what RAM is trying to bring to the table. It seems to be focused on creating something new, addressing the common issues already known on heavy EV pickups, and SUVs.

New Exterior Design, But The Ram 1500 Rev Doesn't Stray Too Far From Its Roots

The Ram 1500 REV features a new exterior design, and is supposed to have cutting-edge technology. According to RAM, it will have exceptional electric capabilities. This could mean both things. It could have powerful electric motors, and it could also have high-capacity batteries. And neither is mutually exclusive. The 1500 REV will be built using Stellantis’ STLA platform. It is being marketed as the EV pickup that will set the benchmarks for towing, payload, and range.

The design of the 1500 REV is inspired by the Revolution Concept. Not unlike a lot of EVs, the brand’s logo is LED illuminated. The headlamps are also LEd, and should project a very clear beam of light turning night into day. The grill is set lower, which allowed space for the designers to create a bold, and stylish front fascia. The low position of the grill could indicate it will be used to direct cool air to the powertrain components. The state of charging can be tracked through indicator lights in the charging port, or from the inside of the truck, either on the digital gauge or the touchscreen infotainment.

The Ram 1500 REV Will Feature A Lot Of Room For Cargo

The 'frunk' of the 2023 Ram 1500 REV

Another interesting detail is the ‘frunk’ space. Since EVs don’t use the space that was reserved for internal combustion engines (ICE), if you pop the front hood open, you get more storage space for your things. The 1500 REV ‘frunk’ is sealed from the elements, and has power outlets. Some rumors say the battery pack will have about 200 kWh, but that has not been confirmed. It is also rumored that the 1500 REV should have 800+ horsepower, possibly closer to 900.

On the subject of battery capacity, it does look like RAM is serious about setting a new benchmark with this. The 1500 REV can be used to power your house when the electricity grid is out, provided your house is equipped for it. It’s an interesting feature. And again, something new RAM is bringing to the table. They must have had a lot of brainstorming sessions during the design process in their Auburn Hills, Michigan headquarters. But they’ve also brought customers together to gather feedback on what is that they look for, and value in a RAM truck. And it looks like it’s paying off well. They’re promising useful, innovative features. Not innovating for the sake of innovation, but to bring something that is above its competitors in the market.

The Ram 1500 REV Has Made A Great First Impression

With all that said, it is only fair to point out that the Ram 1500 REV has a more traditional look, which isn’t a bad thing per se. RAM trucks look awesome today, and the REV is no exception. But, the more futuristic and bold look of the RAM Revolution Concept was not used in its entirety. And maybe that’s a good thing. RAM makes traditional trucks. Capable workhorses that cater to a specific customer. It could be that advancing too much towards a futuristic design could put some of those customers off, as it would not have the traditional rugged look RAM does so well. The interior too is traditional, and robust. It does feature a big infotainment screen, and a digital gauge. But that’s to be expected. You can still hop inside with your dirt work boots, and drive home to find it easy to clean, and maintain.

Ford has the F-150 Lightning, Chevrolet has the Silverado EV, and now it’s time for RAM to shine among its competitors. Pre-orders will be available soon. Keep an eye out, as this promises to be a real bout among the three biggest American truckmakers.
