Over the years, Ford has achieved varied degrees of success with its cars. In the Sports Utility Vehicle segment, the American automaker has produced some successful models like the Ford Explorer, a nameplate that has been part of Ford’s lineup since 1990. Polarizing names like the Ford Flex that had lackluster sales were discontinued, and the once popular names like the Bronco were brought back to the lineup after a long hiatus.

For 2023, Ford currently sells eight SUVs in the United States and the focus of this article is to highlight their features, prices, power, torque, and everything special you should know from their spec sheets. This list has been arranged from the largest SUV to the smallest.

The Expedition is currently the largest Ford SUV you can buy and is one of the most reliable full-size SUVs in the market with some clocking 200,000 miles on the odometer according to iSeeCars.com. Generally, Ford Expeditions are sold in two variants; the regular length variant (the XL), and the extended length variant (the Max). The superiority of the vehicles increases as you move up the trim levels.

The Ford Expedition lineup starts with the base model XL STX. For a retail price starting from $55,125, you get a 12-inch digital infotainment display, two-row seating for five, and cloth seats. The top-of-the-line Ford Expedition is the Platinum Max. This trim is clad with rich leather and boasts the premium Bang&Olufsen sound system. For a starting price of $83,500, you also get what Ford calls Cautiously Controlled Damping (CCD) with suspension road preview. This allows the Platinum trim to have the smoothest ride.

Ford

Sitting right below the Expedition in terms of size is the Explorer, another popular Ford nameplate. The price for the 2023 base model starts at just under $37,000. For that price, you get an eight-way power-adjusted driver seat and four-way power adjustment for the front passenger, a rearview camera, and a 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine that sends power to the rear wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Upgrade to the Explorer XLT from $38,500 and get front heated seats and a 12-speaker Bang&Olufsen premium sound system. On the other end of the trim level sits the Explorer Platinum, which starts at just below $54,000. This luxury trim gets a voice-activated navigation system, wireless charging, cruise control, and second-row heated seats draped in leather. Topping off the range is the King Ranch trim that comes in at $54,075.

The Platinum trim is powered by an option of a 3.3-liter hybrid engine or a 3.0-liter EcoBoost V-6. Four-wheel drive is available as an option in all the Explorer models. Just like the Expedition, the Explorer too is a very reliable vehicle. Perhaps there isn't a better example to showcase its reliability than Ford being commissioned by the US government to produce modified Special Service Vehicle versions of the Explorer for law enforcement agencies, fire departments, and emergency medical services.

Silver 2023 Ford Edge ST
Ford
A dynamic shot of a Ford Edge driving

The Ford Edge is a compact five-seater crossover that debuted in 2007. In terms of size, it fits snuggly between the Mach-E and the EcoSport. It is currently in its second generation and prices for the base model start at $38,000. There are five trims for 2023 - these include the base SE, SEL, ST-Line, Titanium, and the cream of the crop, the ST model, which has a starting price of around $46,000.

All vehicles in the lineup have all-wheel drive as standard, a post-crash alert system, a rearview camera, and dual-zone climate control with cabin particulate air filters. However, the top trim model is powered by a 2.7 liter EcoBoost V6 engine while the base model gets a 2.0 liter EcoBoost engine. The models across the lineup get different variations of Ford’s Co-Pilot 360 technology with the features increasing as you move up the trim levels. Ford’s reliable 6-speaker sound system is fitted in the base models while the top trims are accorded a premium 12-speaker Bang&Olufsen surround sound system.

The differences don’t end there though as manually adjustable cloth seats come in base-level models while electronic adjustable leather seats are the preserve of those who go for the top trim model. Upgrade to the SEL model with $2,000 and the cloth on the seats will be replaced with what Ford calls ActiveX seating material with heated front seats and power adjustment.

Currently, the only fully-electric SUV in Ford’s lineup, you can get yourself a 2023 Mustang Mach-E for $46,000 (that would be the base model Mach-E Select). The EV comes with a single rear motor 70-kilowatt-hour battery configuration. All-wheel drive, and dual motors come as an option. The top trim Mach-E GT comes standard with a 90-kilowatt-hour battery and a motor on each axle and the MSRP starts at $70,000.

BlueCruise and a 360-degree camera come standard in all the models. All models, except the Mach-E selects, get a 10-speaker Bang&Olufsen sound system. If you fancy heated seats, then you should skip the base model and opt for the Mach-E Premium, but that will cost you about $5,000 more than the base model.

Just like the bigger Bronco, the Bronco Sport is also designed to tackle rough terrain. However, it takes a compact form factor but retains some rugged elements like the boxy rectangular body and rounded wheel arches. Prices start at $29,000.

At this price point, you get a single-zone manual climate control, but an extra $2,000 bumps you up to the Big Bend model which upgrades the climate controls to automatic. The top-spec $44,600 Heritage Limited is upgraded with dual-zone automatic temperature control. The new for 2023 Bronco Sport Heritage Limited model is powered by a choice of two engines; a 1.5-liter or a 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine.

The base model and the Big Bend are kitted with a 4.2-inch instrument cluster, but this is upgraded to a 6.2-inch display in the top Heritage trim. The entry-level trims start off with cloth seats and manual seat adjustment while electronic adjustment and vinyl covered with an option of leather trim are available in the top models.

Although the EcoSport is slated to be discontinued soon, it is still available and is currently the smallest (subcompact) and the cheapest new SUV you can buy from the Ford lineup with base model prices starting at $22,000. Five trims are currently available for 2022 starting with the EcoSport S on the low end of the trim spectrum and the EcoSport Titanium as the most expensive trim, coming in at $28,395.

A 2.0L Ti-VCT I-4 Engine with Auto Start-Stop Technology mated to a six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission and 4-wheel drive comes standard across the range. The Titanium model gets additional features like automatic climate control, a power moon roof and sun shade, and a heated steering wheel.

Of course, you’ll get cloth seats if you opt for the base models and Active X leather seats in the top-spec Titanium trim. An additional $3,000 from the base model price will bump you up to the SE model which has the additional blind spot information system (BLIS) and cross-traffic alert.
