With the rise of EVs on the horizon, the Chevrolet Silverado looks to stay relevant in the uber-competitive segment of full-sized domestic pickup trucks. But not much will change between 2023 and 2022. Last year’s model saw a mid-cycle update which included changes to the exterior and interior along with the addition of Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving and a new off-road model in the Silverado ZR2. GM knows shoppers love specialty models and this keeps the vehicle lineup interesting while keeping those customers loyal to the bow-tie brand and attracting new buyers from its competitors.

2023 Chevrolet Silverado Performance And Capability

A White Chevrolet Silverado

Chevrolet has always done a good job of giving its customers a great balance of comfort, performance, and usability across its truck lineup. But choosing one can be a daunting task as there are eight trims of the standard Silverado with more than 40 possible configurations. The Silverado is available in single, double, and four-door crew cabs with either standard or long bed sizes. The trims include:

  • Work Truck
  • Custom
  • LT
  • Trail Boss
  • RST
  • LTZ
  • High Country

A powerful base engine is offered in the 2.7-liter turbo-four that puts out 310 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. It comes matted to the Eight-speed automatic transmission. It's enough to move the pickup to 60mph in 7.1 seconds. The fuel economy is impressive with the turbo-four seeing 20mpg city and 22 highway. Optional engines include the 355 horsepower 5.3-liter V8 which is rated at 16mpg in the city and 21mpg on the highway.

The 420 horsepower 6.2-liter V-8 provides the fastest 0-60mph time at 5.4 seconds and the impressively efficient 305 horsepower 3.0-liter Duramax turbo diesel I-6 which is the slowest accelerating engine to 60mph, but it produces the highest torque number at 495 pound-feet which is excellent for those looking to tow. All three powertrains come paired with the 10-speed automatic. All are available in both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations.

The half-ton Silverado is near the top of the segment as far as towing capability. It has a max towing capacity of 13,300 pounds which is accessible with the 6.2-liter V-8. This beats the Ram 1500’s max tow rating by 550 pounds but still trails Ford’s F-150 by 700 pounds. The 5.3-liter versions can still move 11,500 pounds while the base 2.7-liter can tow up to 9,500 pounds. Payload capability ranges from 1870 to 2280 pounds.

For those needing to pull-move buildings, look no further than Chevy’s 2500HD and 3500HD. Available in single, double, and four-door crew-cab. The optional 6.6-liter Duramax diesel produces 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque. This engine enables the truck to pull up to 36,000 pounds. It comes paired with the Allison 10-speed automatic. The base 6.6-liter gasoline-powered V8 produces 401 horsepower and 464 pound-fe of torque and can tow up to 17,400 pounds. Sadly, it gets an eye-watering 14mpg on the highway. Comparably, the diesel Silverado 2500HD managed 19mpg on the highway.

Interior Quality And Technology

2023 Chevrolet Silverado Interior
Chevrolet

It's no secret that the Chevy fell behind competitors, Ram and Ford in the interior department. This led to a complete redesign of the interior which was intended to give the cabin a more spacious and premium field. Once inside, drivers are greeted by a new driver-oriented 12.3-inch digital configurable instrument cluster. Seats are comfortable, providing plenty of support with heated and ventilated front seats offered along with heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and a heads-up display.

Every Silverado 1500 comes standard with Chevy’s latest infotainment system that supports Apple Carplay, Android Auto, and a convenient mobile hotspot. LT trim and up get a larger 13.4-inch touchscreen with enhanced features such as Google-powered voice assistant, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto along with available Amazon Alexa integration.

Additionally, All Silverado trims LT and above are also equipped with Google built-in compatibility. With it, drivers can control certain vehicle functions by saying, “Hey Google” or pressing the “push to talk” button on the steering wheel. This feature can also be used to text, select music, set reminders, or adjust the temperature.

Safety

Chevrolet Silverado SuperCruise
Chevrolet

Supercruise remains a first for Chevy pickups. The first true hands-free driver assistance technology is available on Silverado High Country and can be used on more than 200,000 compatible roads across the U.S. and Canada. This function uses advanced technology features which include a Driver Attention System and LiDAR map data. This system can see if a driver has turned away from the road ahead too for too long and uses a light bar on the steering wheel to prompt the driver to keep their eyes on the road.

Coming over from 2022 is Chevy’s Safety Assist which includes six standard active safety features that are standard on every trim. They include:

  • Forward Collision Alert
  • Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Front Pedestrian Braking
  • Following Distance Indicator
  • IntelliBeam auto high beams

Those looking for a unique standalone model should consider the Silverado ZR2 Bison. The Off-road specific ZR2 is a collaboration between Chevrolet and American Expedition Vehicles. This was first seen back in 2019 on the Colorado ZR2 Bison – which soon became to most popular special edition offered on the Colorado ZR2.

The Silverado version features the 420 horsepower 6.2-liter V-8 available in the standard truck. It also features a lifted suspension with wider control arms and 40 mm multimatic dampers along with front and rear locking differentials as standard. Other features include power-coated AEV steel front and rear bumpers, boron steel skid plates, and gloss black 18-inch AEV wheels with 33-inch tires. The Bison isn’t cheap as its starting MSRP of $71,895 is more expensive than Ford’s Raptor ($70,555), Ram Power Wagon ($62,715), and just under Ram’s 1500 TRX ($78,890)

Main Competition

It's no secret that trucks see more brand loyalty than other vehicles. The Silverado’s two main competitors, the Ram 150 and the best-seller Ford F-150 have two of the auto industry’s most loyal customer bases with the Toyota Tundra quickly gaining market share.

The F-150 has been one of America's best-selling trucks and the benchmark across the segment in capability, technology, performance, and interior comfort. But in recent years it's seen other brands catch up as its overall design has started to get stale and other offerings in the segment seem more luxurious.

2023-Ford-F-150-Heritage-XLT
Ford F-150

Ram started the big screen revolution in the segment with the introduction of its 12.0-inch infotainment screen in 2019. But it suffers from expensive options that can price out certain customers while falling behind in overall tow rating and offers no regular cab option.

Over the next couple of years, things will remain competitive in the segment as EV offerings become more commonplace which will give buyers even more options as the automotive world, trucks included continues its shift to battery power.
