Toyota may have an impressive lineup of hybrid cars right now, but it was a very long road to get here. The company announced its first-generation Toyota Hybrid System (THS) back in 1997, and put it into production in the Prius at the end of the same year. TSH II arrived in 2003 with major updates to performance and economy, and from there things just got better and better. So, as no surprise, by the end of 2007, the company had already sold over one million hybrid vehicles worldwide, and currently its hybrid lineup takes the lead on the market. Models like the RAV4 Hybrid and Prime, Prius and Prius Prime, and even the larger Tundra Hybrid are pushing Toyota to the top of the list of best-sold automakers in the world. Of course, its lineup is about a lot more than just the three listed above, and here’s a list of all the hybrid models you can currently get from Toyota.

With over 100,000 units sold in 2022, the Toyota Tundra is currently one of the best sold trucks on the North American market. It is of course very far from the leader - the Ford F-Series with over 650,000 units sold - but Toyota is doing everything possible to improve sales. One of these changes is the addition of a new Hybrid model to the lineup. It comes with an i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain that combines a 3.5-liter aluminum V-6 engine with one electric motor. The system delivers a total of 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque - making the Tundra Hybrid the most powerful truck in the lineup. The truck has a towing capacity of 11,450 pounds and manages a combined fuel efficiency of 21 MPG. Testing the Tundra Hybrid, Edmunds said "you'll feel cracks and bumps, and the large all-terrain tires are noisy at certain speeds, but in general the ride quality is pretty smooth for a full-size truck." The Tundra Hybrid is priced from $56,710 to $77,940.

The hybrid system combines a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with one electric motor for a combined 196 horsepower. The electric motor gets its juice from a lithium-ion battery located under the rear seats - a position that maximizes the cargo capacity and offers a low center of gravity. The Corolla Cross Hybrid has an impressive EPA-estimated 42 combined mpg and can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 8 seconds. Prices for the Corolla Cross Hybrid range from $27,970 in the base S trim to $31,065 for the XSE trim.

Toyota unveiled the Highlander back in 2000, and the hybrid version was announced only four years later, but went on sale as a 2006 model. If the first ever Highlander Hybrid was powered by a 3.3-liter V-6 combined with an electric motor, things have evolved a lot over the years, and the 2023 Highlander Hybrid combines a high-efficiency 2.5-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine with two electric motor-generators for a combined output of 243 horsepower. The SUV is offered in both FWD and AWD configurations, with both versions delivering great fuel economy: 36 mpg city/35 mpg highway/36 mpg combined for the FWD and 35 mpg city/34 mpg highway/35 mpg combined. The Highlander Hybrid has a total range of about 600 miles, and, according to Motor Trend, it "offers a compelling alternative to its gas-powered sibling." However, you need to know the Hybrid is a little bit more expensive when compared to its gas-powered brother: it has a starting price of $41,555, compared to $37,755 for the base Highlander.

With almost 400,000 units sold, the Toyota RAV4 is the best sold crossover of 2022. With a history of almost 30 years, the RAV4 has been enjoying this status for quite a while now, and the Hybrid that was first unveiled in 2016 it only makes things better. For the 2023 model year, the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine combined with an electric motor for a total of 219 horsepower - making it the most powerful RAV4 (excluding the Prime) since the V-6 engine was discontinued in 2012. One of the best-selling points of the RAV4 Hybrid is its fuel economy: 41 mpg city/38 mpg highway/40 mpg combined. However, the RAV4 Hybrid is also fun to drive and has surprisingly swift acceleration. The 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid comes in seven trims, with prices ranging from $30,725 for the LE grade to $33,525 for the Woodland Edition.

The third iteration of the RAV4 family is the RAV4 Prime and it may be one of the mush-have plug-in hybrid crossovers of 2023. First announced in 2021, the RAV4 Prime sits at the top of the RAV4 lineup, and it is powered by a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle inline-four engine specially tuned for this model combined with two permanent-magnet synchronous AC motor generators. The system delivers a combined 302 horsepower, while an 18.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack offers an all-electric range of 42 miles. The 2023 Toyota RAV4 Prime also gets an EPA-estimated 94 combined MPGe and a total range of 600 miles. The RAV4 Prime is also very fast, and it only needs 5.7 seconds to run from 0 to 60 mph. Also, because of its 8.2 inches of ground clearance and the fairly soft suspension, the Prime can be a decent off-roader. The 2023 RAV4 Prime comes in only two grades: SE priced at $42,340 and XSE priced at $46,210.

With the third generation announced in early 2022, the Toyota Sequoia is an entirely new model from the ground up. It not only offers a completely updated exterior look, and a new level of luxury on the interior, but it also dropped the big V-8 engines, and it is only offered as a hybrid model. All models are offered with the same powerful twin-turbo V-6 hybrid i-FORCE MAX powertrain from the Tundra that delivers a combined 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque. Depending on the trim level, the Sequoia is offered in 2WD or part-time 4WD configurations, while the TRD Pro is offered only in 4WD. At 5,620 pounds, the Sequoia is not a very light SUV, so its fuel economy is not as impressive: 21 mpg city/24 mpg highway/22 mpg combined. The 2023 Toyota Sequoia is offered in five trims: SR5, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and Capstone with prices ranging from $58,365 to $75,365.

As for fuel economy, the Venza is rated at 40 mpg city/37 mpg highway/39 mpg combined. According to Car And Driver, despite its impressive fuel economy, the Venza also has a few shortcomings: "a smallish cargo area, a buzzy engine, and a cabin that's tighter on passenger space than the RAV4's." The 2023 Toyota Venza is offered in three trims: LE, XLE and Limited, plus the Nighshade special edition. Prices range from $34,120 to $42,265, while the Nightshade edition is priced at $39,455.

Teaser shot of the 2024 Toyota Tacoma Hybrid's tailgate

Although not on sale yet, the Tacoma Hybrid is one of the most anticipated hybrid models in Toyota's lineup. The truck will be put on sale just in time for the 2024 model year, and will borrow most of its design elements, and the powertrain, from the bigger Tundra. Of course, the i-Force Max powertrain will be detuned to most likely a similar level to the Lexus RX 500h: 366 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. To please the purists, Toyota will offer it with a manual gearbox, too! Fuel economy should also be at a similar level to the RX 500h - 27 mpg on the combined cycle. We expect the Tacoma Hybrid to be a very capable truck, with a towing capacity of about 7,700 pounds. Just like its gasoline-powered brother, the Tacoma Hybrid will also benefit from great off-roading capabilities. Prices should start from about $30,000.
