Plug-in Hybrids have only come to light in the last decade or so with cars like the Mitsubishi Montero PHEV bringing this technology to the masses for the first time. That was well over a decade ago and technological advancement in EV propulsion has taken PHEVs to a whole new level, not just in terms of efficiency and emission, but also from a performance standpoint. PHEVs offer the perfect middle ground for people who want to take on electric motoring but like the safety net of a combustion engine. PHEVs also offer performance enthusiasts the instantaneous torque of an electric motor with the sweet exhaust note and top end of an IC engine. So, here's a list of 10 cars available for sale in 2023 that showcase the best of modern PHEV technology.

1 2024 Corvette E-Ray - The PHEV Supercar Bargain

Arriving this fall, the 2024 Corvette E-Ray is GM's first take on a hybrid supercar and at first glance, the company seems to have nailed the formula. With prices expected to start at $105,000, it’s a true bargain PHEV supercar. The all-new 2024 E-Ray features the base C8's 6.2-liter N/A V-8 which is assisted by a 160-horsepower electric motor driving the front wheels that takes power from a small and light 1.1-kWh Battery pack. The result is a first-ever AWD Corvette with 655 horsepower and a 0-60 mph time of 2.5 seconds. Flat-out, the Z-ray can cross 180 mph, but this isn't your average PHEV.

Unlike other cars on this list, the Corvettes electric powertrain is meant to fill in the gaps in power and improve grip, which is why it gets a small battery pack that is only good for a top speed of 45 mph in electric mode, and it completely detaches itself over 150 mph to reduce mechanical resistance. Chevy has given the Z-Ray a cool feature called 'stealth mode' which allows you to drive your Corvette in electric mode for up to 4 miles.

The BMW 3 Series has been the benchmark in the entry-level luxury segment, offering a fine blend of practicality, luxury, and sedate German styling. The 330e takes the practicality quotient of the 3 Series up a notch, by offering a PHEV drivetrain. Power comes from a 2.0-liter turbo Inline-four from the base 3 Series making 181 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, in isolation to the single 111 horsepower electric motor.

The combined system output is a respectable 249 horsepower and 310 pound-feet, which is respectable for the segment. With 41 miles of electric range, the 330e might not be the best, but offers a sufficient electric range for most daily commutes and gets a cool XtraBoost feature which adds an extra 40 horsepower of electric thrust for 10 seconds at the press of a button for those brisk overtakes. Prices start at $42,950. With a company-claimed fuel-efficiency figure of 138 MPG, the 330e could make for a near-perfect company car.

For all those who were on the lookout for a fast family wagon but found the RS6 Avant's loud styling a little off-putting, fear not because Porsche has answered your prayers. Enter the 2023 Porsche Panamera Turbo S-E Hybrid Sports Turismo, a fast four-door Porsche wagon that wins hearts with its subtle and elegant Porsche styling and a potent yet refined PHEV powertrain. The 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 is a VAG staple that in this application comes paired with a 134-horsepower electric motor for a combined system output of 690 horsepower and 642 pound-feet of torque.

The electric motor takes juice from a 17.9 kWh battery pack which allows that car to go up to 31 miles on electric power alone and in optimal conditions, Porsche says this hybrid super wagon is good for over 97 MPG. What's more impressive however, is the fact that this Plug-In Hybrid family wagon will do a 0-60 mph sprint in just 3.2 seconds and has a top speed of 196 mph, making this one of the fastest production wagons on sale today.

4 2023 Ferrari 296 GTB - Best Entry-level Plug-in Hybrid Supercar

Ferrari 296 GTB

Calling any Ferrari a 'bargain' might sound heavy-handed, but the 296 GTB seems like a true hypercar bargain. This entry-level supercar is the first official V-6-powered car for the Italian marque and the first rear-wheel drive hybrid. Headline figures include a twin-turbo V-6 hybrid setup making 819 horsepower, a sub-three-second 0-60 mph time, and a starting price of about $320,000. The 120-degree V-6 churns 654 horsepower and 546-pound feet which is further boosted by an electric motor making 165 horsepower and 232 pound-feet of torque. The electric motor takes power from a 7.45 kWh battery pack that weighs 154 pounds (70 kilograms) and is packed over the floor, right between the seats and the engine, for optimal weight distribution.

The 2023 296 GTB can drive up to 15 miles on purely electric power, but you can choose to empty all the juice in a few laps if you select Qualifying mode. Opting for the Assetto Fiorano pack gets you Multimatic dampers and carbon fiber nubbins like a front splitter that not only saves weight, it also adds 20 kilograms of downforce. The Ferrari 296 GTB then is a glimpse of the future of Ferrari and PHEVs.

2023 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG side profile

Joining BMW in a battle of mighty performance-centric PHEVs, Mercedes has released the all-new S63 AMG. As the first-ever hybrid AMG S-class model, this all-new performance version will take on the fight to cars like the Bentley Flying Spur PHEV and even the latest lineup of the 7 Series. Powering the S63 AMG is an AMG staple 4.0-liter biturbo V-8 that's assisted by an electric motor that sits on the rear axle. The combined system output is 791 horsepower and 1,055 pound-feet, making this the most powerful S-class of all time.

Power is sent to all-four wheels via two separate gearboxes, first a nine-speed for the V-8 and a two-speed transmission for the electric motor. That motor takes power from a 13.1 kWh battery pack, which gives the S63 AMG, the ability to travel for 20 miles in pure EV mode. Despite the punchy powertrain, this AMG limo helps itself to all the equipment from the range-topping S-class, with AMG touches sprinkled across the cabin like the AMG-specific gauge cluster.

The XM is an M-exclusive product and the first BMW M car to feature a PHEV powertrain. It features the tried and tested 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 that also powers the M5 CS, which is further assisted by an electric motor that’s integrated into the 8-speed transmission which results in a combined system output of 653 horsepower and 590 pound-feet. This makes the 2023 BMW XM, the most powerful BMW-M production vehicle of all time. The electric motor gets its power from a 25.7 kWh battery pack that allows the car to travel up to 55 miles on pure battery power.

BMW has also packed in a ton of luxury with a range of custom interior options as a part of what BMW calls the Exclusive M-Lounge with individual rear seats and contrasting colors for the front and rear of the cabin space. But BMW is not stopping here as they recently announced that a more powerful XM Red Label trim is set to arrive this autumn. The 2023 BMW 545e might not be the most frugal PHEV out on sale today, but the inline-six turbo hybrid drivetrain makes it a proper M550i or even an M5 substitute, especially for those eco-conscious Execs. The BMW 545e xDrive is the range-topper PHEV in the 5-series hierarchy and in addition to the added refinement over the cheaper 530e's 4-cylinder PHEV drivetrain, the 2023 545e packs plenty of punch. The 3.0-liter inline-six pairs with an electric motor for a total output of 387 horsepower and 422 pound-feet.

Power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed transmission and BMW's xDrive AWD system. Courtesy of an 11.6 kWh battery pack, it can manage up to 33 miles on purely electric power, and BMW claims in ideal condition, the 545e can return up to 166 MPG. BMW has also fitted this 2023 545e with a clever anticipatory hybrid drive, which uses the onboard Sat Nav to identify the best places to use electric power and where to use the gas engine.
