Triumph gets a head start on its 2024 lineup with the April 2023 release of its sporty Street Triple 765 R model. This bike is coming off a major update with a wide range of improvements over the previous generation. The engine itself saw some significant buffs with more torque on tap, a freer-breathing intake-exhaust tract, and increased throttle response across the range.

New electronics provide improved ride control and safety while the existing electronics come tweaked for a greater range of control. Improved ergonomics seal the deal with a more natural riding position and greater control over the front end.

The Street Triple lineup first saw the light of day back in 2007. It was itself modeled on the Speed Triple platform with power coming out of the 2006 Daytona 675.

2024 Triumph Street Triple 765 R Performance And Capability

Power for the Street Triple 765 R comes from an upgraded, 765 cc triple with improved throttle response and gearing set for acceleration. Both the intake and exhaust tracts breathe more freely to aid the volumetric efficiency and make some torque gains.

The 2024 Triumph Street Triple 765 R produces 118 horsepower and 59 pound-feet of torque. Bore and stroke mic out at 78 mm and 53.4 mm respectively with a rather spicy compression ratio of 13.25-to-1 that will demand top-hook pusholine, but that's the price you'll pay for the performance you get.

Dual over-head cams time the 12-valve head, and the mill comes with liquid cooling for thermal stability. Power flows through a slip-and-assist clutch that prevents excessive backtorque from finding its way upstream to the engine to protect the rear contact patch, plus it delivers a light lever pull and broad friction range for greater slow-speed control and reduced hand fatigue.

As for electronics, the updated Riding Modes are more dynamic, and now, there's a Track Mode that lets you quickly set up for maximum performance. The existing traction control feature was also buffed with a switchable, Corner-Optimized Traction Control that provides greater safety and stability. A Front-Wheel Lift Control helps you get the most out of the potential acceleration, while a Shift Assist feature lets you bang your way both up and down the range without so much as touching the clutch or rolling off the throttle. All the gadgetry provides a safety net for the Street Triple 765 R's estimated top speed of 136 MPH.

Design

The factory sharpened up the styling on the Street Triple 765 R with added aggression and poise to beef up curb appeal. The front fender is rather small to reduce windage with spoiler-type uprights that shunt wind pressure outboard of the forks.

Dual LED headlights dominate the head-on perspective, complete with angry-brow daytime running lights for effective, round-the-clock, two-way visibility with the world. A small flyscreen tops the front end ahead of a five-inch Thin-Film Transistor display that handles all the instrumentation and acts as an interface for the beefed-up electronic ride-control systems.

The 3.96-gallon fuel tank comes with a prominent flange up top and a strong wane toward the rear where it meets the narrow waist that gives your thighs a break and allows for an easy reach to the ground when it's time to deploy your lamborfeeties. Seat height is 32.5 inches off the deck, which is comfortable enough for the majority of riders, though shorter ones will be on tip-toes for sure. That said, the 417-pound wet weight should be easy enough to hold up.

A sporty upswept tail section completes the look with a cover over the pillion pad for more of a solo look, though the passenger foot pegs still give you away if left installed. An LED taillight rides in the tip of the tail section, and the rest of the rearward goodies come mounted to a slender rear fender.

Chassis

Triumph
Silver Ice 2023 Triumph Street Triple 765 R cruising up the road

The main structure of the Street Triple 765 R is an aluminum beam twin-spar frame with a die-cast subframe section for the lightweight strength these items bring to the table. It has a cast-aluminum swingarm to complete the bones.

Cast aluminum-alloy wheels round out the rolling chassis with a symmetrical, 17-inch diameter that has long been so typical of sportbikes. Z-rated rubber shoes the wheels in a 120/70 ahead of a 180/55, so you can count on the hoops to handle everything you and the Street Triple can throw at them.

Showa's goodies show up at both ends with a set of 41 mm usd forks and 4.52 inches of travel up front and 5.2 inches of travel out back. That should be plenty, even on rough roads and when squatting in a corner.

The steering head establishes a rake angle of 23.7 degrees with 3.85 inches of trail to make this bike quite nimble indeed with precise flicks and willing reversals, no doubt largely in part of the low curb weight, but the steering geometry also plays a definite role. Suspension at both ends rocks the full trifecta of tweaks with adjustable compression- and rebound-damping settings along with a spring-preload adjuster, so you can dial in incrementally for just the right ride.

Competitors

Triumph has competition close aboard from Austria in the KTM 790 Duke. Right out of the box, KTM manages to impart its characteristic spiky design and angular details in spite of the dearth of actual bodywork.

KTM 790 Duke

Aggression comes naturally to the Duke family, and this model is no exception. KTM is generous with the electronic rider aids starting with a switchable traction control feature, backtorque mitigation through the Motor Slip Regulation feature.

Cornering ABS rounds out the package, but the SuperMoto Mode disables the rear ABS for pros who are comfortable breaking the rear end loose. The Track Mode comes with track-ready settings for those systems for quick setups ahead of track days.

As for power, the KTM produces 103 ponies to fall just a skosh shy of the Trumpet lump. One extra thing KTM brings to the table is a steering damper that takes the edge off any kickback events. KTM wins again at the checkout with a $9,199 sticker, though I doubt that's enough to buy the business away from Triumph by itself.

He Said

“British engineering doesn't get enough credit in general, but bikes like this show that the country that invented the Supermarine Spitfire has still got precision in their blood. Maybe it's something in the water, I don't know, but the Brits manage to wring quite a bit of power from its triple and support that power with a bevy of electronic goodies to boot. A solid competitor for a slice of the mid-size naked-sport market.”

She Said

My wife and fellow motorcycle writer, Allyn Hinton, says,

“The 765 R might be the winner here. Sure the 'RS' is the up-spec model, but for the money, I like the 'R.' In the Street Triple family, a shorter-ratio transmission means better acceleration and the upgraded engine, inspired by the outgoing Moto2 engine, has a slew of new internals. Triumph pumped up it's Street Triple family to a new level of performance.”
