When you think about Triumph, your mind instantly wanders off into a world full of three-cylinder motorcycles. After all, the company specializes in them and even makes the world’s biggest production engine on a motorcycle which too is a three-cylinder unit. However, before Triumph took this road, it followed the mass-market approach and fiddled around with the inline-four configuration. The first result was the TT600, which gave birth to the Daytona 600, ultimately leading to the Triumph Daytona 650 that gave the then-dominant Japanese 600cc screams a run for their money.

Triumph Daytona 650 Was Britain’s Flagship Supersport In 2005

The Daytona 650 was a predecessor to the hugely popular Daytona 675

The Daytona 650 followed the same supersport recipe, and it was a road-going motorcycle that offered immense fun on the racetrack. A lot of the credit went to its 650cc, four-cylinder engine, good for 114 horsepower and 50 pound-feet. This was comparable to the leading Japanese supersports (the ‘05 CBR600RR made 117 horsepower) and gave the British moniker a good chance to make a name for itself. It wasn’t a copy-paste job, though, as the 650 had a more tractable power band than its peaky rivals who had massive redlines.

The Daytona 650 also kept up with its rivals elsewhere. Triumph built it around a perimeter chassis and coupled it with adjustable telescopic forks and monoshock. Meanwhile, it rolled on 17-inch alloy wheels clamped by Triumph-branded dual disc brakes up top. Topping all this was a standout design with edgy lines and brawny bodywork all around, in addition to a semi-digital cockpit.

What makes the ‘05 Daytona more special is its rare nature. It was on sale for just one year before being superseded by the Daytona 675, and you’ll rarely come across a clean example in the States. But if you like what you see, there is a chance for you to take one home, as Iconic Motorbike Auctions has come to the rescue.
