Triumph has a wide range of motorcycles, from sport bikes like the Speed Triple 1200 RS to adventure touring models like the Tiger 900; but one of their most iconic styles would definitely have to be their café racer style bikes. Triumph has been around in one way or another since 1902, but only as we know them today since 1983. Management under John Bloor since then marked a new era of productivity for Triumph as production woes were finally addressed. Japanese manufacturers set the standard in those days for efficient and high-quality production, so Bloor took a leaf out of their book and emulated their production practices. However, it wouldn't be until 2000 that profit broke even over the investment and operating costs until that point. Nonetheless, Triumph distinguishes itself by putting out a refined, quality product with a classic aesthetic. The Scrambler 900 in particular exemplifies those qualities while proving itself in every way as an approachable and versatile option for beginner riders.

The Scrambler's 900cc liquid-cooled engine offers adequate power without being threatening to zip out from under you. Its 64 horsepower lets you hustle and pass if you need to as you make your way around town. The engine itself is exceptionally fuel efficient, offering a very comfortable 54.7 MPG average, which means you should have plenty of breathing room if you don't make a daily stop at a gas station as you make your commute. Triumph also offers a larger 1200cc model if you think a little extra power is in order.

Its rubber gaiters help keep out the elements like rain and street grime to prolong the life of your fork seals — a useful feature for beginners who may not be in the habit of keeping up with routine checks and maintenance, as well as experienced riders who may have grown complacent. It also has a twin rear suspension with adjustable preload to comfortably compensate for a passenger.

Yamaha really did everyone a favor by showing the industry the potential of innovating away from traditional cable throttles. The ride-by-wire system utilizes a sensor to measure throttle input and calculate optimal throttle response, which enables lots of other possible safety features. In layman's terms, this means if your rear wheel starts to slide out, the onboard computer will reduce throttle input to help restore traction, which is definitely nice for beginners who may not yet be conditioned to ease off the gas in such conditions. It's also a rather responsive system to control fuel delivery relative to its cabled predecessor.

That segues nicely into another set of features that Triumph offers on this 2023 Scrambler model. Switchable riding modes are managed by the ride-by-wire system to provide optimal response on the road, off of it, and in the rain. As mentioned before, in the rain or around the ice, you would benefit from the extra confidence that you won't suddenly jack-knife sideways down the road as you reach a stoplight. You are also able to toggle the ABS on or off to suit your preference. The throttle map and traction control can be adjusted as well.

Not to be confused with a slipper clutch that can reduce rear-wheel skipping by reducing the effect of engine braking, the Triumph Torque Assist Clutch. The bottom line up front about this feature is that it offers a super light pull. If you're new to riding and end up on one of these Scramblers, you can count yourself lucky to not learn the feeling of clutch fatigue in gridlock traffic. The basic principle is that the weight of the pull of the clutch levers correlates to the amount of power being generated, so in slow traffic, your pull will be lighter than at speed.

A lot of newer motorcycles these days are offering fancy, complicated touchscreen displays that bombard you with information. For a beginner, such things can be a blessing and a curse. On one hand, it can be nice to have everything at your fingertips and not have to fish in your pockets for anything. On the other hand, the last thing a beginner should be doing is fussing with or deciphering their display on the move. The Triumph Scrambler 900 has a fairly simple analog speedometer with an LCD section for other information like an odometer reading, while turn and neutral indicators are mounted on the lower outer edge of the gauge.

The 2023 Scrambler 900's spoked wheels are wrapped in dual-purpose Metzeler Tourance tires for excellent traction on the road and off of it, as well as great mileage in all conditions. As a beginner, you might not be so inclined to engage in that sort of thing, but it's definitely reassuring to not be on slick sport tires if you unexpectedly find yourself needing to venture a little bit off the beaten path or if bad weather strikes and washes lots of debris into the road.

One of the best things to stay engaged as a new rider if you have an initial "cold-feet" period is personalizing your ride. The Scrambler 900 come out of the gate with great style and class, but there are options to modify it and make it your own in any case. The seat can be swapped out for something more suited to solo riding like the Tamarit Jarama seat, if you end up getting tired of people asking for a ride around the block. The mirrors can be swapped out for something more low-key or something with a wider reach to clear your shoulders easier. Likewise, the suspension can be modified to your liking, and there are options that suit off-roading even better than what comes stock.
