China is arguably one of the leaders when it comes to making electric cars. With so many homegrown brands like Nio, Xpeng, and a bunch of lesser-known Chinese EV companies out there, China's electric car adoption is far ahead of any other nation in the world. What's been missing is a production EV supercar, at least up until this point.

Say hello to the GAC Aion Hyper SSR, and while Its first EV hypercar is actually the Nio EP9, it isn't technically a mass-produced model. The Aion Hyper SSR is an EV supercar that you can buy in GAC Aion dealerships by late 2023, though you can already order one today-- assuming that you are a Chinese resident.

Tesla Rivaling Performance

The GAC Aion Hyper SSR is grabbing headlines due to its sheer performance. Two variants will be made available--a base Hyper SSR and a Hyper SSR Ultimate. Both come with a total system output of 1,225 horsepower, but the Hyper SSR Ultimate splits that power to each of the four wheels. Not only does the Ultimate have better traction, but also a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) time of just 1.9 seconds. That Tesla Roadster that Elon Musk failed to show us in production form to this day better be shaking.

That puts the Hyper SSR into the same territory, at least in terms of acceleration, as the Rimac Nevera. What's more amazing is the fact that the Hyper SSR Ultimate costs CN¥1.68 million ($239,312), while the base version will cost even less at CN¥1.28 million ($182,333). Yes, that's still a lot of money for the general population, but that's just 1/10th the price tag of the Nevera with roughly the same acceleration.

The Aion Hyper SSR Has that Typical Electric Hppercar Look

From a styling perspective, the GAC Aion Hyper SSR looks less like a hypercar as its numbers would suggest, and more like a mid-engined supercar. The Hyper SSR's front end is characterized by slim LED headlights with the new Aion logo, a pair of cooling ducts under its fascia, as well as a front splitter that's painted in a sort of electric blue shade.

That same blue treatment can also be seen in its extended side skirts, and in typical supercar fashion, the doors open upward. Large diameter alloy wheels with aerodynamic elements, along with a rear end with a full-width LED light bar give the Hyper SSR a modern appearance. Below those taillights is a large carbon fiber rear diffuser that's also painted in a contrasting blue highlight.

Inside, the Hyper SSR continues to feature a whole lot of blue elements. The dash design is very slim, suggesting that it also might lack a glovebox. Two digital displays are also seen, with the middle one eliminating the need for any hard buttons--for better or worse. In photos, the materials seem to be of high quality, and it better be considering the six-figure price tag of this thing.

But Wait, GAC Who?

While GAC Aion's parent company, GAC Motor is probably unknown to the West, the automaker is actually China's fifth largest. It also operates in various regions outside China such as Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. The GAC Aion Hyper SSR will only be limited to China, and it's probably not homologated to be sold outside their market.
