Expanding its M-badged range, BMW has taken the wraps off the new-for-2023 M 1000 R. Like its faired sibling, the M 1000 R is essentially a souped-up S 1000 R with loads of top-shelf components. However, the highlight here is the naked’s updated engine, which makes it the most powerful naked motorcycle on sale today.

The BMW M 1000 R Is More Powerful Than The Ducati Streetfighter V4

The M 1000 R employs a 999cc, inline-four engine that belts out 210 horsepower and 113Nm (83.3 pound-feet), around three horsepower more than the Ducati Streetfighter V4 and the MV Agusta Rush 1000, and a massive 45 horsepower more than the S 1000 R. The US-spec M 1000 R pumps out 205 horsepower, though, just like the S 1000 RR.

In addition, BMW has also altered the secondary gear ratio to focus on punch rather than the top end. Thanks to this, the M 1000 R has a claimed top speed of 174mph but a claimed 0 to 124mph time of just 7.2 seconds. Oh, and while you’re blasting down the road (or track), a titanium exhaust helps up the aural experience.

The BMW M 1000 R Boasts Extensive Aerodynamics

The wings look a bit odd, but they add 24 pounds of downforce at over 135mph

All this power on a naked is all fun and games until you can’t keep the front wheel on the road. And to ensure you don’t have a hard time doing it, BMW has equipped the M 1000 R with aerodynamic winglets. These add 24.3 pounds of extra load to the front end right after you cross 135mph and the company claims it’ll help you brake later and accelerate faster on the track.

Still worried? Well, don’t fret as the M 1000 R also boasts an extensive electronics package derived from S 1000 RR. The list includes ride modes, traction control, launch control, hill start assist, engine brake control, and a bi-directional quickshifter – all accessible via a 6.5-inch TFT. The drifters out there will also appreciate the addition of the new Brake Slide Assist feature.

Extra power needs extra braking performance, and BMW has done exactly that

Like all else, the M 1000 RR’s chassis components have undergone an upgrade too. The suspension (45mm forks and monoshock) now boast DDC (Dynamic Damping Control) which works in conjunction with other electronics to help find the perfect suspension tune in any condition. You also have the option to adjust it yourself.

Meanwhile, the braking setup comprises 320mm/220mm discs (F/R) clamped by aluminum calipers finished in blue. All this is mounted on forged aluminum wheels which, coupled with the wider handlebar, should make the M 1000 R a sweet handler.

2023 BMW M 1000 R - Pricing & Availability

The new M 1000 R retails for $21,345 which is $4,150 less than the Ducati Streetfighter V4 S. This makes it a solid super naked in the States (even though it makes less power than the EU-spec version) and you can expect it to reach dealerships by early 2023. In case you want even more kit, there’s also an M 1000 R with the M Competition package that’ll set you back by $26,435.
