It was only a few years ago that if you wanted a zero-emissions midsize or large luxury sedan, the only real option was the Tesla Model S. But just in the past few years, a whole new host of automakers are breaking into the segment, including the world’s leading luxury automakers and some newcomers to the fray. The Porsche Taycan made its debut in 2020, and the Audi E-Tron and range-leading Lucid Air hit the market for the 2022 model year. For 2023, the BMW i7, Mercedes-Benz EQE, and Genesis Electrified G80 have also joined the list of options for buyers.

The latter model from Genesis is based on its internal combustion G80 midsize sedan, which has impressed against stalwarts of its segment — like the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes E-Class — by providing top-tier refinement, comfort, and driving dynamics in a package that is notably more affordable than options from more established luxury brands. The Electrified G80, as the name suggests, is the all-electric counterpart to the G80, and like that model, it’s making a strong debut.

2023 Genesis Electrified G80 Performance And Capability

Genesis has presented the Electrified G80 in a simplistic fashion for its debut year. There is only trim, and only one drivetrain is available. The 2023 Electrified G80 uses dual 136-kW electric motors on each axle for a total output of 365 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. With its all-wheel-drive setup, the Electrified G80 will hustle from 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds, over a half-second quicker than the sportiest ICE G80. That 0-60 time was reserved for supercars not long ago, though the Genesis is actually beaten out by several of its rivals for its ability to zip from a stop to 60. But on the daily trek, few buyers would consider it underpowered.

Edmunds noted the Electrified G80 “isn’t a sport sedan, and doesn’t claim to be,” but found it was not a letdown to drive. It’s not as sporty as options like the Taycan, the publication noted, but it has a composed ride quality that handles corners well and delivers “ample power” to get up to speed. It was noted ride comfort is generally comfortable while cruising, but the standard adaptive suspension didn’t quite iron out all the bumps of the road.

The Electrified G80 is fitted with an 87.2-kWh battery pack, along with a standard battery heating system, that can deliver up to 282 miles of driving range with 97 combined MPGe according to EPA testing. That’s not the most impressive figure in its class, but real-world testing has shown the Genesis lives up to its EPA rating. Edmunds noted the electric G80 went 309 miles on a full charge, and Car and Driver managed 280 miles.

The Electrified G80 can re-juice its batteries in a hurry. It can be charged from 10 to 100 percent in about seven-and-a-half hours through a 240V charge, and with DC Fast Charging at up to 350kW it will recharge from 10 to 18 percent in just 22 minutes, according to Genesis. To aid range, the G80 offers various levels of regenerative braking, including a one-pedal model that will bring the sedan to a complete stop.

Exterior Design

The Electrified G80 sports nearly all the same design cues as its internal combustion counterpart which was refreshed for the 2021 model year, and that can easily be considered a good thing. The all-electric G80 sports a refined and utterly handsome exterior.

Genesis’ Crest Grille is similar to the flagship G90 and has been blocked off with a chrome-like finish to aid aerodynamics, and it seamlessly houses the onboard charger. The grille is flanked by thin, stacked headlights and running lights with Genesis’ “Two Lines” design showing up again behind the front wheels. Sweeping fender flares flank the sloping hood, and gently raked rear glass adds to the sedan’s sleek profile. All models are fitted with 19-inch aluminum wheels and LED exterior lighting all around.

Interior Quality And Technology

The Electrified G80’s interior styling is nearly identical to that of the ICE G80, making for a minimalistic but stylish cabin. The dash is topped by a sizeable 14.5-inch HD display that resides above a thin bank of vents and a center stack featuring plenty of traditional switchgear and two rotary dials acting as the gear selector and the control for the infotainment system.

As standard, the G80 is fitted with Nappa leather seats that are heated and ventilated in the front with a 16-way adjustable driver’s seat. The interior also features a 21-speaker Lexicon premium audio system, four total USB chargers, a heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel, three-zone climate control, and a microfiber suede headliner and pillars. Additional standard features include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, head-up display, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, and wireless charging. One notable feature missing is a panoramic roof — it isn’t offered as standard or as an option.

The Electrified G80 has put an emphasis on sustainability with its interior materials, which include natural dyes for the leather upholstery, recycled wood trim, and recycled synthetic fabrics. While the Electrified G80 shares its interior styling with the ICE version, it is less spacious due to its battery pack. Rear passengers sit slightly higher, the rear seats don’t fold flat, and trunk space is limited to just 10.8 cubic feet. And there’s no frunk offered.

The 2023 Genesis Electrified G80 carries an MSRP of $80,950 with destination, and with just one trim offered and with only a few factory add-ons and optional exterior paint choices, its price will remain close to the $81,000 mark. The Electrified G80’s starting price is about $29,000 more expensive than a base, 2.5T internal combustion G80 and about $8,000 more than the fully loaded model.

However, the Electrified G80 does come will all the features of the top-spec ICE G80.

Due to “extremely limited availability,” the Electrified G80 is only currently available in 23 states scattered throughout the U.S. To find out if the electric sedan is available in your state, visit Genesis’ website.

The Electrified G80 occupies a fairly unique standing in the luxury EV sedan segment. It doesn’t offer the range or performance of the BMW i7, Lucid Air, or Tesla Model S, but it costs significantly less money — about $8,000 cheaper than the base Air and a whopping $40,000 cheaper than the Beemer.

It is more closely rivaled by the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE, which starts at about $85,000 in its top, non-AMG spec. The all-wheel drive EQE 500 delivers 402 horsepower and 633 pound-feet of torque, a notable jump from the G80’s 365 horsepower and 516 pound-feet, but its range is limited to 260 miles. Both are well-equipped with each offering some unique features, but the EQE offers more trunk space despite both models having extremely similar overall dimensions.

Overall, the 2023 Electrified G80 is certainly worth consideration for anyone seeking a luxury all-electric sedan. It is comfortable, well-equipped, upscale, and attractive, and delivers respectable driving dynamics and range with quick charge times. It’s far from the most practical EV available, but it is also one of the most affordable without feeling or looking like a sacrifice was made to save some dough.
