Genesis has become a big thorn in the side of established luxury automakers like Audi, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Lexus, Cadillac, and others. Effectively the luxury division of Hyundai, Genesis is now offering a lineup of stunning models made up of sedans and SUVs featuring the refinement, features, luxe appointments, comfort, and driving verve of their more established rivals while their models often cost notable less. Genesis may not have the brand recognition or be the status symbol of the traditional leaders in the luxury segment, but the automaker is providing some seriously great cars nonetheless.

That has been furthered by Genesis’ push into the all-electric segment. Genesis now offers a an all-electric version of its G80 sedan, the GV60 small crossover EV, and the compact Electrified GV70, the EV iteration of its internal combustion GV70 crossover. The Electrified GV70 is making a strong debut for the 2023 model year with stylish looks, a bevy of power, respectable driving range, and the all the positive attributes now expected of the Genesis brand.

2023 serves as the first year of the compact crossover, and it arrives on the scene with a single powertrain choice. The Electrified GV70 is powered by dual electric motors at each axle offering a notable 429 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. Somewhat similar to what we’ve seen on Hyundai’s N products, there is also a “Boost Mode” that temporarily ups the GV70’s output to 483 horsepower for 10-second bursts. Genesis hasn’t offered 0-60 mph times, but the EV should be capable of zipping from a stop to 60 in about 4.5 seconds or less.

With dual motors, the Electrified GV70 is standard with all-wheel drive, but a Disconnector Actuator System automatically connects or disconnects the motor and drive shaft dependent on the driving situation. This allows the GV70 to switch between two-wheel and all-wheel drive to help extend its driving range. It also features a “smart” regenerative braking system based on driving habits, road conditions, and by using real-time navigation in addition to a one-pedal driving mode.

The Electrified GV70 is fitted with a 77.4kWh battery pack with standard DC fast charging. In ideal conditions, Genesis claims the GV70 will re-juice its batteries from 10 to 100 percent in about seven hours on through a 240V charger. At its max input of 250kW, the batteries will be charged from 10 to 80 percent in about 18 minutes. With just one drivetrain offered, all Electrified GV70 models offer 236 miles of driving range, according to Genesis. The EPA has yet to publish its official range for the model.

Exterior Design

The Electrified GV70 doesn’t look much different from its internal combustion counterpart, and that can be considered a positive. The electric GV70 sports sophisticated, handsome, and refined styling. Its Two-Line headlamps, Genesis’ Crest Grille with an inverted “G-Matrix” pattern, forward-motion-conveying character lines, swooping liftgate, uniquely shaped glass behind the C-pillar are all eye-catching without being gaudy.

Genesis apparently knows its all-electric crossover is attractive because there are almost no ways to alter its looks. The model is only available in four colors, black and three gray/silver options, and all are fitted with the same 20-inch wheels.

Interior Quality And Technology

While Genesis may not offer many ways to customize the exterior looks of the Electrified GV70, its packed just about everything most buyers will desire into the cabin. As standard, the crossover sports leather upholstery with heated and ventilated front seats with the driver’s seat offering a reclining function with a power foot cushion for relaxing while charging. Also standard is adjustable ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, three-zone climate control, wireless charging, four USB ports, and two 12V power outlets.

The GV70 also offers vehicle-to-load charging for powering appliances. Technology is also packed in with a standard 14.5-inch HD center display, with navigation, adjacent to an 8.0-inch digital gauge cluster. Genesis’ infotainment system is attractive, quick to respond, and the system doesn’t completely rely on the rotary dial — there are still physical knobs and switches.

However, some buyers may be annoyed that, while Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity are standard, they require a wired connection. While we haven’t yet had a go in the Electrified GV70, Genesis’ other models, including the gas-powered GV70, have excelled in providing the kind of fit and finish and interior refinement expected of a premier luxury offering.

Safety

The Electrified GV70 is loaded with standard safety features, and the only driver’s aid separating the two trims is the Prestige’s head-up display. As standard, the crossover is equipped with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot collision avoidance assist, Hyundai’s Blind-Spot View Monitor, smart cruise control with stop-and-go feature, a surround view monitor, lane keep and follow assists, and more. The all-electric crossover segment is heating up with several new models, including the Genesis, entering the fray. For its price, practicality, and performance, the Electrified GV70 most closely competes with the Tesla Model Y, Polestar 3, Audi Q4 e-tron, Cadillac Lyriq, and Mercedes-Benz EQB.

The Genesis’ biggest downside among its competitors is its limited range. With an estimated max range of 236 miles, the GV70 is far behind the Tesla’s 330 miles, the 312 miles offered by the Lyriq, 265 of the Q4 e-tron. Even the Mercedes outpaces it with a range of 250 miles.

Then again, the Genesis’ 429 horsepower (excluding its boost feature) is far more than you get from most of those models. The base Lyriq offers 340 horsepower, the Q4 e-tron comes with a max of 295-hp, the Model Y delivers up to 384 horsepower and the also-new-for-2023 Lexus RZ tops out at 308-hp.

The Genesis also costs more than many of its closest competitors — the top-spec Model Y can now be had for under $60,000 — but its long list of standard creature comforts, driver’s aids, and upmarket build quality could justify the added price for many buyers along with its impressive power, standard AWD setup, and excellent charging times.

Genesis may be a relatively newcomer to the luxury market, and particularly the all-electric segment, but the Electrified GV70 is making a strong debut that could continue to sway some buyers away from the more established brands.
