After going the utilitarian way with the Aik, Swedish startup Cake has now taken the wraps off the Bukk electric motorcycle. The EV first broke cover last year as a limited-edition model, but it has now entered mass production so each of us can enjoy it. And enjoy we will, given the Bukk has all the motocross ingredients you’d want, minus the complexities of an ICE MX bike. It’s also the most powerful Cake EV yet.

The Cake Bukk Boasts An All-New Electric Motor

The Bukk comes in two motor options - 13kW or 16kW

The new Bukk debuts Cake’s all-new electric motor dubbed ‘Jante’. It’s an interior permanent magnet (IPM), radial flux setup wrapped in aircraft-grade aluminum cases. There’s also a dual-bearing shaft in there which, according to the EV-maker, offers optimal efficiency, power output, and reliability, with smoother acceleration for better control lower in the rev range.

As for performance, the Bukk can be had in two options–Super Light or Power Light. The former promises 270 pound-feet (at the wheel), 13kW (peak), and a 50mph top speed, while the latter boasts 336 pound-feet, 16kW, and 56mph at full whack. Couple this with the low 195-pound heft, and you can sprint to 28mph in 2.5 seconds (or 2.15 for the Power Light). Regardless of your pick, each Bukk has a 2.9kWh battery pack, good enough for “three hours of trail/off-road riding”, post which the battery takes just under three hours to power back to 100 percent. It’s also removable sans tools, in case you just want to swap it.

The Cake Bukk Has Off-Road-Ready Underpinnings

With plenty of suspension travel and ground clearance, the Bukk will power through any terrain you throw at it

Remember the “motocross ingredients” in the introduction? Well, that’s extra prevalent for the underpinnings. As standard, the Bukk rides on 19/18-inch (F/R) aluminum motocross wheels that wear off-road-spec knobby rubber and single petal disc brakes. This is paired with Formula Tech upside-down forks and a RacingBros monoshock, both fully adjustable, with 270 mm and 297 mm travel, respectively.

However, the party trick is that you can opt for top-shelf WP XACT Pro forks (278 mm travel) up top and couple it with either an Ohlins S46 or WP XACT Pro 8946 shock outback–for extra money, of course. If that’s not MX-ready enough for you, there's also 965 mm of seat height and 350 mm of ground clearance. For reference, the KTM 350 SX-F has 359 mm of GC and ~300 mm of travel.

Finally, coming to features, you get a TFT instrument cluster here, three brake modes, three customizable ride modes, app connectivity, and OTA updates. All this is topped by the svelte, simple design that flexes a beautiful blend of light grey, silver, and white colors. Don’t fret, though, as Cake also offers an all-black livery.

The Cake Bukk Starts At $10,270

This is how the road-legal Cake Bukk looks like

Cake has priced the Bukk EV at $10,270 for the Super Light and $11,070 for the Power Light variant. The suspension upgrade, meanwhile, adds another $3,200, whereas the road-legal package - with LED lights and number plate mounts - cost $700. Considering the base price, the Bukk slots right between the KTM 450 SX-F and the Kawasaki KX450, that makes it a pleasant prospect on paper. You won’t have to wait a lot either, as the deliveries will begin in July 2023.
