“The future is electric” is now an outdated term, EVs are here. If you are someone who has been eyeing a motorcycle in your office’s parking lot and planning to start riding, you should take a look at electric motorcycles.

Electric motorcycles are fun to ride — the immediate torque and wheezing sound are a recipe for excitement. But before you book the LiveWire One test, you should start on a smaller electric motorcycle. Beginner-friendly electric motorcycles make a lot of sense, and in most cases, are a better choice for new riders compared to gas motorcycles. They generally don’t have a transmission or a clutch, so they are much easier to learn on. Plus, they are easier to maintain and cheap to run. Oh, and electric motorcycles are safe for the environment, too!

1 Zero FXE

Zero

Zero FXE is built on largely the same platform as the model it replaces, Zero FXS, but it offers so much more than that. FXE is a street-oriented supermoto, designed in conjunction with Hugh Design’s owner Bill Webb. It is stylish. But don’t let the style fool you, it is still a serious player that punches way above its class. The 7.2 kWh and the potent motor push out 46 hp and 78 lb-ft of torque, pushing the bike to a top speed of 85 mph.

The lithium-ion battery is big enough to take you where you are going, with a claimed range of 100 miles in the city and close to 50 on the highway. At 300 lbs, the motorcycle is light enough for new riders as well as fun to throw around in the streets. This is one of the primary reasons that make this one of the best electric motorcycles for new riders. Other features include the LED light cluster (cleaner than FXS), 5” TFT display, fully adjustable Showa suspension, Bosch ABS, and Pirelli Diablo Rosso IIs. These features come at a price, though. At $12,995, this is an expensive beginner motorcycle.

2 Super Soco TSx

Falling right between Super Soco TS and TC in terms of specifications, TSx is powered by a 1.5 kW continuous-rated hub motor from Bosch, producing 4 hp and 40.5 lb-ft of torque. The power figures make it an electric equivalent of a 50cc motorcycle, which is excellent for beginners.

The motorcycle offers a range of 44 miles with a single battery and 80 miles with a dual battery, and since it is light, it can be pushed up to 45 mph easily. Sure, it’s not a lot, but for a price of $3,600, this is a terrific budget-friendly electric motorcycle for beginners. And it has excellent modding potential, too!

3 Miku Super

Stepping up, Miku Super is an electric equivalent of a 125cc ICE motorcycle. The 3kW motor produces a respectable 173 lb-ft of torque, enough to push the motorcycle up to 50 mph. Thanks to the two removable batteries, a light weight of 240 lbs, and an efficient motor, Miku Super offers a range of up to 64 miles. And the dual batteries can be charged in four hours, making this motorcycle easy and practical.

Additional features include LED lights, a smart dash, USD charging port, smartphone connectivity, and fingerprint-based startup. And don’t let the moped-esque shape fool you — the Miku Super is a hoot to ride thanks to its light construction and torque!

4 Zero S

Zero S
Zero

Being the second Zero in the list, Zero S is another sleek offering from this premium electric motorcycle brand. Zero S is perhaps what you would think when you think of a Zero motorcycle — minimalist and elegant. The motorcycle features a 7.2 kWh motor that produces 46 hp and 78 lb-ft, pushing the motorcycle from 0 to 60 in 9.2 seconds with a top speed of 98 mph. And the lithium-ion battery can run for up to 89 miles.

The Zero S does leave something to be desired in terms of its charging time. A standard charger can charge the battery in 9 hours, but you can opt for a fast charger (for an additional cost) that can bring down the charging time to 3 hours. The design is another perk of this motorcycle, making it an excellent beginner motorcycle. It is light, and the riding position is welcoming for even those who have never put their leg over a bike before.

5 Zero DSR

Three entries for a brand named Zero — that’s ironic — but that’s how good these motorcycles are! Zero DSR is unlike the other two Zero motorcycles in this list, thanks to its aggressive dual-sport styling.

DSR produces 70 hp and 116 lb-ft, pushing the bike up to 90 mph, and the 14.4 kWh battery is large enough to propel the bike for 163 miles. It’s pretty similar to Zero S, but what differentiates DSR is its styling. Like Zero S, it can be charged fully in 9 hours, and 3 hours if you opt for the fast charger.

6 Maeving RM1

Paying homage to the British heritage, Maeving RM1 is a new offering from the brand to take on the Chinese competition. This gorgeous motorcycle takes styling cues from the 1920s board trackers while prioritizing urban riding. The electric motor produces a humble 4 hp of power and 118 lb-ft of torque, with a top speed of 44 mph. It isn’t the fastest on the list, but with a range of 80 miles and stunning looks, need you ask for more?

The dual battery can be charged from 0 to 100% in around 4 hours, and the batteries are removable, making this motorcycle a great commuter, too. You can even opt for an additional battery at some extra cost. Other features include LED lights, bar-end mirrors, mobile connectivity, and Bosch ABS. And lest we forget, 7 different colors! This electric motorcycle is best for beginners who don’t want to compromise on style.

7 Sondors MetaCycle

Originally priced at $5,000 but recently bumped up to $6,500, Sondors MetaCycle still remains an ideal choice for beginner bikers. The motor produces 20 hp and a peak torque of 80 lb-ft, making this PMAC hub motor quite potent for the segment. With a top speed of 80 mph and a claimed range of 80 miles, thanks to the 4kWh battery, this motorcycle can even sustain some highway miles. And the removable battery can be charged within four hours, unlike other Zero motorcycles on the list.

The lightweight design (300 lbs) and a cast aluminum frame with WP suspension make this motorcycle easy to ride and maneuver, making it suitable for urban riding. However, don’t expect high performance — the narrow faux tank and sleek seat don’t offer much grip.

Developed by an East Asian startup, Alrendo TS Bravo is aimed at commuters. However, its steep pricing of $12,000 may make it inaccessible for some riders. But the pricing does bring some goodies with it. The design is sharp and sporty, and the potent 11 kW motor puts out 77 hp and 86.7 lb-ft of torque. The top speed is 95 mph, so you can even take it for an occasional spin on the highway.

The electric motor also features a cooling system, and the battery is capped at 16.6 kWh, which will push the bike for 260 miles in ideal conditions and 95 miles on the freeways. And the 3.8 kW charger will charge the motorcycle in four hours. If you are looking for a sporty yet approachable beginner electric motorcycle, the TS Bravo is one that you shouldn’t overlook.

Only limited to the Indian market so far, Ultraviolette F77 is still a motorcycle that’s worth a mention in this list. It is an amalgamation of technology, approachable power, and cost-effective manufacturing. The motorcycle features a steel trellis frame and 41 mm USD forks, encapsulating a PMAC motor that pushes out 40.5 hp and 62.6 lb-ft of torque. You can push this motorcycle up to 95 mph in ideal conditions!

The 10.2 kWh SRB10 battery also offers a range of 190 miles on a single charge in the city. Other features include onboard GPS, diagnostics, ride history, etc. But the stand-out feature of F77 is the style — it is minimal yet fresh.

10 Pursang E-Track

From a recently revived brand, Pursang E-Track is a unique motorcycle that takes styling cues from dirt oval racers while offering more than enough range and speed for new riders. This motorcycle features an 11 kW Bosch motor paired with three batteries, making 14.7 hp and 49.4 lb-ft. It offers a maximum range of 87 miles and a top speed of almost 70 mph, and the batteries can be charged within six hours.

The E-Track is perfect for those who like the classic styling in a motorcycle that does not compromise on utility and approachability. Electric motorcycles have evolved dramatically in recent years and its effect can be seen in the beginner-class segment. With such varied and feature-rich options, it can be slightly tricky to pick the best bike for yourself.
