Nowadays, barely a week goes by without a new CFMoto motorcycle rumor. We’ve already seen the company’s plan to launch an Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 rival and go the Triumph way with a three-cylinder engine. But now, it’s shifting focus to the electric motocross segment. The news comes via the Chinese giant’s patent filings that show two new, small electric MX bikes to rival the likes of Triumph-owned Oset, KTM, and the Honda CRF-E2.

Like most of its new motorcycles, you’d expect this upcoming CFMoto to take inspiration from KTM. Surprisingly, that isn’t the case, as the E-bikes feature a bespoke, futuristic design. There are two variants in the patents - one with 10-inch wheels and a bigger iteration rolling on 14/12-inchers. These put them right in the ballpark of KTM’s mini-motocrossers, the SX-E3, and SX-E5.

However, the CFMoto duo seems less premium than the Austrians. That’s because they roll on telescopic forks rather than WP upside-down units, albeit with similar spoke wheels and single disc brakes at both ends. Likewise, you should expect a basic features package - ride modes, keyless ignition, and a simple instrument cluster.

Another notable detail is the origin of these patents. Instead of its hometown in China, CFMoto has filed them in Europe, which is a subtle hint at the company’s target market. To give you an idea, such motocrossers make a lot of sense since they are perfect learner’s motorcycles for kids and adolescents. This way the biggest setback of EVs - range - gets sidelined too. You can also think of it as a means to prepare the upcoming generation for the electric revolution. Our only concern, though, is the kids will have zero idea about how a gearbox or clutch works.

The CFMoto Electric MX Bikes Could Debut Soon

So when can you expect CFMoto’s new EV? Well, it’ll debut sooner than expected, probably in the next couple of months. This is because these patents were filed alongside the recently unveiled 2023 CFMoto Papio XO cafe racer. The interesting point will be the price tag, as we think Chinese offerings will undercut its Austrian rivals, which start from 4,299 Euros (~$4,700). If so, this will also help it undercut similar gas-powered offerings like the Yamaha YZ65 priced at $4,799. In related news, CFMoto is readying a premium electric scooter to worry the BMW CE 04.
