Jay Leno took the 2023 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Black Series for a spin to get the lowdown on the supercar that is so elusive the comedy legend could not get Mercedes to loan him one for his MSNBC show, “Jay Leno’s Garage.” Instead, Leno had to borrow one from his friend, Robert Herjavec of "Shark Tank." However, Mercedes sent AMG Brand Ambassador and four-time Trans Am Series Champ Tommy Kendall over to give Jay the lowdown on the GT Black Series. Leno and Kendall looked over the car and took the AMG for a drive around L.A., and Black Series impressed Leno, a man who has seen a lot of cars.

Leno heralded the "science" of the Black, and said he prefers it over many super cars because of details, such as a comfortable driver’s seat and an impressive steering wheel.“It gives you such respect for the engineers who develop stuff,” Leno said. The famed comedian and automotive collector said any manufacturer can make fast car, but building a vehicle with windows that don’t squeak is the actual challenge. Leno also loves all the extra legroom the AMG GT Black Series gives drivers and passengers. The AMG GT Black Series features an all-carbon fiber body with metal doors and fenders. Interestingly, the front of the car is one big radiator and cooling system, Kendall noted. It requires a significant cooling system because of all the power the four-liter, V-8 bi-turbo generates, namely, 720 horsepower. The AMG GT Black Series accelerates from 0 to 125 mph in nine seconds and 0 to 60 in 3.1 seconds. Mercedes electronically limits the Black Series’ maximum speed to 202 mph.

Other features on the 2023 Black Series include a flat-plane crank with no oil pan, a double-diffuser exhaust, a carbon cross tube, and carbon sheer panels in the front and back. An interesting feature is a rear biplane aerofoil the driver can electronically adjust. There is also a completely adjustable nine-stage traction control owners can tune to their driving style. Traction modes include Sport Plus and a mode that delivers a drive similar to a Mercedes SLR, Kendall says. Drivers can turn off the traction control if they want.

“This is a true mid-engined car,” Kendall said. “It’s as mid-engined as a Ferrari.” The strangest aspect of the Black Series is that it’s a mid-engined car despite the large engine compartment. Leno loves the hood, which lifts straight up to make engine inspection easy. Leno thinks Mercedes has created a great supercar.
